About Xinjiang Medical University
Xinjiang Medical University, which is located in the beautiful city of Urumqi, is the only higher-education medical university jointly established by provincial and ministerial departments in Xinjiang. With the care and support of Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, the predecessor of the university, Xinjiang Medical College, had been officially included in the 156 key projects of the national "First Five-Year Plan". The university was founded in 1954 and began its enrollment from July 1956. In June 1998, Xinjiang Medical University was established by merging Xinjiang Medical College and Xinjiang Traditional Chinese Medicine College. In August 2016, the university was officially approved as the higher-education university jointly built by the provincial and ministerial departments.
At present, there are 17,290 staff and teaching members, including 1,544 teaching faculty and administrative staff, 490 of which (31.74%) have senior professional titles. There are approximately 28,300 full-time students, including 22,298 undergraduates and junior college students, 4,853 master’s degree candidates, 555 doctoral candidates, and 580 international students of all levels.
Xinjiang Medical University consists of 25 colleges that offer 28 and 10 majors for undergraduates and junior college students, respectively. Clinical medicine discipline ranks in the top 2.63‰ of the ESI global rankings, while pharmacology and toxicology disciplines ranks in the top 1% in the ESI global rankings.
There are 5 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctorate degree, 2 to offer professional doctorate degree, moreover, 13 first-level disciplines authorized to offer master degree, 8 to offer professional master degree, and 4 postdoctoral research stations and 4 postdoctoral joint research stations as well.
Now there is one State Key Laboratory jointly established by the Ministry of Science & Technology and provincial departments, one state base for experimental research, one international science and technology cooperation base approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, nine subcenters of the National Clinical Medical Research Center, and one international cooperation joint laboratory approved by the Ministry of Education.
The university has 8 affiliated hospitals directly under its jurisdiction, forming a cluster of medical resources with concentrated advantages, distinctive features, extensive development, overall linkage, and high social visibility and influence. The university has continuously strengthened exchanges and cooperation with well-known universities at domestic and international levels, and established cooperative relations with universities and research institutions in Russia, Japan, Britain, Tajikistan, Georgia, Kazakhstan and other countries.
Xinjiang Medical University began to recruit international students in 1993. In 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it became one of the first 25 medical colleges in China to accept self-financed international students majoring in clinical medicine, with teaching in English language. It was marked as an Advanced Group of Education for international students in China, ranked among the best in national evaluation of undergraduate medical education for international students, and it was a demonstration base for universities accepting overseas students studying in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. Our international education has formed a complete education system covering undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees. We have a team of teachers with excellent academic skills, comprehensive strength of disciplines, standardized management and first-class teaching and living environment, which has attracted many international students to study in our university. In the past 30 years, we have trained more than 1,620 international students, including more than 120 post-graduate students, over 1,200 undergraduates and over 300 students as language and medical technology trainees, covering Clinical Medicine, Clinical Discipline of Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Stomatology, Acupuncture and Moxibustion and Tuina of Chinese Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Pharmacy etc.
